About the Artwork
This sacred composition portrays the Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, when the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Christ Child fled from the persecution of King Herod under God's protection. Guided by an angel, they journey safely into Egypt, trusting completely in the Lord's providence and care.
Rendered in the distinctive visual language of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian iconography, the composition depicts the Holy Family travelling across the waters by papyrus boat with the pyramids of Egypt rising in the background. Rich in symbolism, the scene recalls God's faithfulness in protecting His Son and fulfilling the words of Scripture: "Out of Egypt I called my Son" (Matthew 2:15).
Created by Ethiopian Christian artist and iconographer K. Haile Maskel, the artwork draws upon the ancient traditions of Ethiopian sacred art. Through vibrant colours, rich symbolism, and harmonious composition, it reflects themes of divine guidance, hope, protection, faith, and God's unfailing presence with His people.
Faithfully reproduced as a museum-quality Giclée print, every detail of the original artwork is preserved with exceptional colour, clarity, and longevity, creating a timeless work of devotional beauty.
Whether displayed in a prayer corner, church, study, or home, this artwork serves as a lasting reminder of God's protection, the Holy Family's faithful obedience, and the hope found in trusting His divine providence.
