Artist Bio

K. Haile Maskel Samuels is a British iconographer whose practice is grounded in the sacred visual language of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

For more than two decades, Haile has devoted his work to the painting of archangels, saints, and biblical narratives, following the theological order and canonical disciplines of Ethiopian Christian iconography. His process is meticulous and prayerful, guided by established traditions governing form, gesture, colour, and composition. Each icon is created not as an illustration, but as a sacred object shaped by spiritual intention and doctrinal meaning.

Haile’s work is particularly recognised for its radiant colour and visual vitality. While firmly rooted in Ethiopian iconographic tradition, his palette carries an added warmth and luminosity influenced by his Caribbean heritage, giving his icons a distinctive sense of clarity, joy, and presence.

His work has been exhibited in churches, galleries, and sacred spaces, and he regularly shares his knowledge through talks and creative workshops within educational and community settings.

Through his ongoing practice and through Konjo Arts, Haile continues to uphold Ethiopian sacred art as a living tradition — one that speaks across cultures, generations, and contemporary life.
