About the Artwork

This sacred composition depicts Abba Samuel of Waldebba, one of the most revered saints of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Renowned for his life of prayer, asceticism, and unwavering devotion to God, Abba Samuel is portrayed seated upon a lion, symbolising spiritual authority, courage, and divine protection. The surrounding imagery includes the Tetramorph—the four symbolic representations of the Evangelists—expressing the glory of Christ and the proclamation of the Gospel.

Rendered in the rich visual tradition of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian iconography, the composition reflects themes of holiness, perseverance, contemplation, and God's abiding presence. Through vibrant colours and symbolic imagery, the artwork serves as both a devotional aid and a celebration of Ethiopia's ancient Christian artistic heritage.
