About the Artwork
This sacred composition depicts the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, known in Ethiopian Orthodox tradition as Lidete Simeon. The artwork portrays the Holy Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph presenting the infant Jesus in accordance with the Law, with the righteous elder Simeon receiving the Christ Child and recognising Him as the promised Saviour.
Inspired by Luke 2:22–35, the icon reflects the fulfilment of prophecy, the revelation of Christ to the world, and the joyful encounter between Simeon and the Messiah he had long awaited.
Rendered in the rich visual tradition of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian iconography, the composition conveys themes of faith, obedience, hope, and divine promise. Through vibrant colours and symbolic imagery, the artwork serves as both a devotional aid and a celebration of Ethiopia's ancient Christian artistic heritage.
